This package fully prepares students for entry level clinical coding using the International Classification of Diseases – Australian Classification of Interventions in Healthcare and the Australian Coding Standards (ICD-10-AM, ACHI, and ACS).

Successful completion will give you a formal qualification – Diploma in Clinical Coding which covers all skills defined by the clinical coding industry for recognition in Australia.

This Diploma is recognised for entry-level clinical coding work in Hospitals, Government, Insurance and Research organisations. This includes: analyse the diseases, injuries and procedures done at hospitals using ICD-10-AM according to national and jurisdictional requirements.

Your pathway to knowledge

The course is designed to get you ready for a coding job, not just to gain knowledge but real skills. Using eHRol, the world leading clinical coder training tool, to simulate the clinical coding environment, with our tutor acting as your mentors.

Coding is a profession for people who are detail oriented and can interpret instructions well.

There are no prerequisite qualifications for this course other than .
Applicants must be proficient in English. in order to understand complex instructions to benefit fully.

Options are available for those with previous qualifications (through recognition of prior learning – see the details form below to apply)

International Students Studying Offshore

ICD coding is considered to be a skill in demand as defined by the Australian Government.

EHE courses are provided top coding educators using world class coder training tools allowing international students studying offshore to study for formally recognised ICD-10-AM qualifications.

The Diploma Package is presented in 5 courses.  The learning is integrated, teaching a number of skills at the same time.  The estimated hours to complete includes study time, practice and assessments (665 hours).

A diploma can be expected to take 2 years to complete, though our students may complete more quickly or slowly as their time allows.  The course includes:

Required Tools

Medical terms text book ($60 – $100)

Code Books – you must have access to ICD-10-AM resources to take this course – full details of how to obtain your books are in the Getting Started Guide but a summary and links are given below. ICD-10-AM costs approximately $350 – $500 depending on the format you choose and the edition you need. You may need access to a grouper tool, but more information about this will be provided when you enrol.

  • Hardcopy Code Books – 5 books in the set
  • Electronic Code Books
    • TurboCoder – Electronic code book and reference tools combined – eHE suggest this option as the best fit for our courses. Use the student discount code provided when you enrol.

If you are in a country where ICD-10-AM is not licensed (such as India or the Philippines) you will need to obtain permission to purchase the code books. We will give you information on how to do this and as an EHE student you can expect to be approved. You will need you have your EHE student number when you apply.

Medical terminology and anatomy text – must be purchased separately.

Materials Provided

  • Learner’s guides – are the text books for clinical coding used in conjunction with other references and coding books.
  • Presentation videos of key content where relevant.
  • References to other sites and documents to assist additional learning
  • Access to eHRol is included: this simulated coding environment contains thousands of real patient records or extracts from real records with instant feedback for practice and assessment in addition to tutor support.
  • Formal assessment is ongoing throughout the course building your confidence and skills as you go.
  • Zoom meetings for online discussions with your personal teacher.

Recognition Upon Successful Completion

eHE is authorised by the Australian Government to issue qualifications including certificates associated with this course.

Upon successful completion you will receive the Diploma of Clinical Coding (HLT50321) indicating that you have successfully shown your competence in the areas below. If you do not complete or pass the whole Diploma you may request an Statement of Achievement for those competencies you did successfully completed.

Industry Engagement

eHE staff and contributors have been active participants in the national Workforce evaluations of clinical coder education, and the recent review which led to the development of the Diploma in Clinical Coding.

Our course developers and tutors have worked as coders, auditors, and lecturers in Health Information Management Programs and many have been senior members of the Health Information Management Association National Board. They have worked as advisers to coding services in Australia and internationally and are regarded as senior members of the profession.

The eHE training team participate regularly in clinical coding governance activities discussing coding standards and correct coding with the eHRol community of Teachers, Coding Managers and Mentors.

Applying for Course Credit

Doctors and Nurses

If you are qualified as a medical doctor or a university graduate nurse and are up to date with clinical practice you may claim competency in medical terms. You qualify for a shorter version of the course without clinical knowledge units and can complete a shorter version of the course as you will be given credit for :

  • HLTCCD003 Use medical terminology in healthcare
  • HLTCCD004 Interpret clinical documentation using knowledge of anatomy and physiology

This version has a lower cost than the full program but gives you the same full qualification.

What to do:

  • To enrol in the course with credit provide copies of your qualifications. We will review your documentation and confirm if you do/do not qualify.

Apply for Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have a question about recognition of prior learning please provide details of your qualifications and we will confirm whether you can receive recognition and your course options. You need one of the following:

  • Medical Degree (as a Medical Doctor) - this does not include specialty branches such as Ayurveda or Dentistry or Pharmacy, or Laboratory qualifications)
  • Nursing Degree (3 - 4 year Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent)
  • Upgrade from prior coder training - for those with qualifications such as:
    • Certificate IV in Clinical Coding
    • BSBMED301 Interpret and Apply Medical Terminology Appropriately
    • HLTADM005 Produce Coded Data
    • HLTADM006 Undertake Complex Clinical Code

ICD-10-AM Editions in different countries

The Diploma must be taught in the current edition of ICD-10-AM. The current version differs depending on the country you will be working in and eHE will offer courses in each code system version – but we are starting with ICD-10-AM 11th edition.

  • Australia is currently using ICD-10-AM 12th edition with ACHI (the procedure code system)
  • New Zealand, Qatar and others are currently using ICD-10-AM 11th edition with ACHI
  • Saudi Arabia, Ireland and others – currently using ICD-10-AM 10th edition with ACHI.
