Clinical terms – the basis to many careers

This package prepares is designed for those who wish to work in healthcare and need to understand how clinical terms are ‘built’ from their prefixes, roots and suffixes and to understand what these terms mean, including abbreviations and anatomy, physiology and common diseases and interventions.

This unit is designed to help you build the skills and knowledge required to interpret and apply medical terminology in many situations including:

  • Assist with patient enquiries, booking appointments, medical form management, handling messages which include clinical content
  • Communicating with health professionals
  • Preparing reports for insurance providers, billing and similar activities

International Students Studying Offshore

Recognition Upon Successful Completion

eHE is authorised by the Australian Government to issue qualifications including certificates associated with this course.

What will I learn

Graduates of this course will gain and demonstrate high value skills

Ability to:

  • interpret and follow written instructions containing medical terminology
  • produce documents containing correct medical terminology according to the organisational requirements.
  • use medical terminology correctly in oral communications
  • identify and use appropriate abbreviations for medical terms and associated processes.

Factual knowledge of:

  • medical terminology relevant to the practice, including the fundamental word structure used in medical terms
  • outline the relevant policies and procedures
  • identify sources of information available to check on medical terms.

Industry Engagement

This course has been designed with consideration of the requirements for ‘work ready’ clinical coders. eHE staff and contributors have been active participants in the national Workforce evaluations of clinical coder education, and the recent review undertaken by the Victorian Government which led to the development of the Victorian Cert IV in Clinical Classification.

Our course developers and tutors have worked as coders, auditors, and lecturers in Health Information Management Programs and many have been senior members of the Health Information Management Association National Board. They have worked as advisers to coding services in Australia and internationally and are regarded as senior members of the profession.

The eHealth Records online learning portal (eHRol) is cloud-based and ideal for studying health record content, data and code systems. eHRol is the end-to-end tool to simulate the EHR (electronic health record) environment, develop skills and workforce capabilities.

Doctors and Nurses

If you are qualified as a medical doctor or a university graduate nurse and are up to date with clinical practice you may claim competency in medical terms. You qualify for a shorter version of the course without clinical knowledge units and can complete a shorter version of the course as you will be given credit for the medical terms section of this course.  This version has a lower cost than the full program.

What to do:

  • To enrol in the course with credit provide copies of your qualifications. We will review your documentation and confirm if you do/do not qualify.

Apply for Recognition of Prior Learning

If you have a question about recognition of prior learning please provide details of your qualifications and we will confirm whether you can receive recognition and your course options. You need one of the following:

  • Medical Degree (as a Medical Doctor) - this does not include specialty branches such as Ayurveda or Dentistry or Pharmacy, or Laboratory qualifications)
  • Nursing Degree (3 - 4 year Bachelor of Nursing or equivalent)
  • Upgrade from prior coder training - for those with qualifications such as:
    • Certificate IV in Clinical Coding
    • BSBMED301 Interpret and Apply Medical Terminology Appropriately
    • HLTADM005 Produce Coded Data
    • HLTADM006 Undertake Complex Clinical Code

Clinical Terms and Knowledge   From: $1,175.00 sign-up fee and a $225.00 / month for 19 months

Fees are in Australian Dollars and are subject to change annually.

ICD-10-AM Editions in different countries

The Diploma must be taught in the current edition of ICD-10-AM. The current version differs depending on the country you will be working in and EHE will offer courses in each code system version – but we are starting with ICD-10-AM 11th edition.

  • Australia and New Zealand – currently using ICD-10-AM 11th edition with ACHI (the procedure code system which works with ICD-10-AM).
  • Saudi Arabia, Ireland and others – currently using ICD-10-AM 10th edition with ACHI.

You should select the relevant code system version for where you wish to work. The version used in Australia will change to ICD-10-AM 12th edition with ACHI in July 2022. eHE will offer courses in 12th edition starting in 2022.

Note: ICD coding is considered to be a skill in demand as defined by the Australian Government.
